![]() ![]() ![]() This process is called selective signal enhancement, and without it, a nervous system can do almost nothing. At any moment only a few neurons win that intense competition, their signals rising up above the noise and impacting the animal’s behavior. Neurons act like candidates in an election, each one shouting and trying to suppress its fellows. Neurons act like candidates in an election, each one shouting and trying to suppress its fellows.Įven before the evolution of a central brain, nervous systems took advantage of a simple computing trick: competition. If the theory is right-and that has yet to be determined-then consciousness evolved gradually over the past half billion years and is present in a range of vertebrate species. The brain evolved increasingly sophisticated mechanisms for deeply processing a few select signals at the expense of others, and in the AST, consciousness is the ultimate result of that evolutionary sequence. The theory suggests that consciousness arises as a solution to one of the most fundamental problems facing any nervous system: Too much information constantly flows in to be fully processed. The Attention Schema Theory (AST), developed over the past five years, may be able to answer those questions. Maybe that’s why so few theories have been able to tackle basic questions such as: What is the adaptive value of consciousness? When did it evolve and what animals have it? Theories of consciousness come from religion, from philosophy, from cognitive science, but not so much from evolutionary biology. Yet one of our most important biological traits, consciousness, is rarely studied in the context of evolution. ![]() Ever since Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859, evolution has been the grand unifying theory of biology. ![]()

![]() ![]() The footage made it look as if the protests were destroying the city, but MSNBC never used a clip from World War Z during its coverage instead, someone else put MSNBC's overlay over the scene. ![]() A similar incident happened in 2020, when MSNBC was falsely accused of using footage from the movie World War Z as b-roll during protests in Philadelphia. Republic later took the footage down from its official channels, noting that it wasn't the only outlet to air the " erroneous" video. ![]() This becomes much more apparent when the full video is seen: The gameplay shown in Republic's broadcast is largely zoomed-in footage of a fighter jet flying across a darkened sky, but the full gameplay video includes more video game-y camera movements and close-ups of an anti-air canon that's clearly a video game asset. This was false, and fact checker Mohammed Zubair dug into the story, finding the footage was from an Arma 3 gameplay video on YouTube. Republic attributed the footage to Hasti TV, claiming it showed Pakistan military using airstrikes to aid the Taliban against Afghan resistance. Related: Six Days In Fallujah Protested By Game Devs & Iraq War Veteran Still, it provides a realistic simulation of generic, modern warfare, and that fact has landed its gameplay in the hands of news outlets like Republic. An Arma 3 Vietnam War expansion pack was released earlier this year, but it's one of the few pieces of the game that directly ties into a real, historical event. Arma 3 is based on a fictional, near-future war. ![]() ![]() So, let’s start with small perennials first. If a dart monkey is upgraded 3+/x/x or x/x/3+, then they won't turn. When activated, the ability turns itself and up to 19 other dart monkeys into Plasma Monkeys which shoot plasma blasts like the Super Monkey's 2/x/x upgrade. After round 80 however, the Ultra-Jugg loses some power due to the increased ceramic health. It's one of the cheapest Tier 5 upgrades and is useful for grouped ceramic rounds such as round 63.
